MaKayla Shorts – Head Coach

MaKayla was honored to serve as the Head Volleyball Coach of Democracy Prep during 2017-2019, a role in which she not only taught fundamental skills but also inspired young athletes to work as a cohesive team. After taking a couple of years off to grow her family and create lasting memories, she is back with a vengeance, eager to share her extensive knowledge and unwavering passion with youth players for the game of volleyball. She believes that every player has the potential to excel and aims to foster an environment where dedication and hard work are celebrated, setting the foundation for both athletic and personal growth.

Marina Fowlkes – Assistant Coach/Conditioning Specialist

Marina Fowlkes grew up playing sports in middle and high school, including soccer, basketball, and All-Star competitive cheerleading. Her Junior Varsity soccer team led an undefeated season as district champs. She cheered for Texas A&M in Laredo, Texas, then went on to coach cheerleading at Destiny High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Marina and her husband Eric moved to Las Vegas as home coordinators for Boystown Las Vegas. Sports were important in their home roles and highly required their boys to play a competitive sport. Many went on to play at a higher level or in college. Marina is dedicated to watching the growth of her team through intense conditioning,
character, and team building.

Craig Ettleman – Assistant Coach

Father of three girls—two tweens and a toddler—with the loving support of his competitive wife, Lori, Coach Craig hails from Guam. Growing up in a large family, he learned leadership and discipline early on. A three-time state Tae Kwon Do champion and Junior Olympics medalist, he earned his black belt as a teen and has coached youth classes. An accomplished athlete, he excelled in various sports while prioritizing academics.

With his daughters playing club volleyball, the sport has become an obsession. He understands that success requires relentless dedication and continuous improvement. His coaching focuses on building confident athletes through innovative training and strategic drills. Now coaching in NYS, including as an assistant for NYS REC teams, he recognizes that it’s time to work!
